Care for nervous patients in Plymouth

Dental anxiety can affect people of all ages and can prevent you from seeking routine or emergency dental care. At Plymouth City Centre Dental Practice, we help nervous patients feel safe, informed, and in control from their very first contact with us.

We take time to listen, explain everything clearly, and move at a pace that feels right for you. Our approach focuses on trust and comfort in a no-pressure environment, with additional support options like IV sedation available if needed.

What is dental phobia?

Dental phobia is an intense fear of dental treatment that can cause people to delay visiting the dentist or avoid appointments altogether. It often goes beyond feeling nervous and may include panic, distress, or physical symptoms such as nausea or sweating.

We see patients who feel scared of the dentist but still need treatment, offering dental sedation where necessary, and we can adapt your care to help you regain confidence and protect your oral health without pressure or judgement.

How we help patients with dental phobia

Support for nervous patients is built into how we deliver care, and there’s no additional charge for taking extra time, explaining treatment, or moving at your pace.

If treatment is required, we'll provide a clear treatment plan in advance and talk you through everything in the plan before we move ahead. We'll never proceed until you are comfortable, and we will always listen to your concerns. During treatment, you can take a break any time you like.

For those with more severe dental anxiety, additional support is available. Tom Olivelle has experience providing sedation when it is clinically appropriate, helping patients who feel unable to cope with treatment otherwise. Dental sedation is always considered carefully and used only when needed, after other approaches have been explored.

Do I need help with dental anxiety?

If fear or anxiety has delayed your dental visits, caused you to cancel appointments, or made treatment feel overwhelming, the right support can make a real difference. Avoiding the dentist often allows small problems to become more complex over time, which can reinforce anxiety rather than relieve it.

We regularly help patients who haven’t seen a dentist in years, as well as parents who want to prevent dental fear developing in their children. By creating a calm, supportive environment and explaining care clearly and gently, we help patients of all ages build trust, grow confidence, and feel comfortable returning for care.

Our role is to help you (and your family) receive the treatment you need, when you’re ready, without pressure or judgement.

Supportive dental care led by experience

For over 30 years, Plymouth City Centre Dental Practice has supported patients across Plymouth with compassionate, patient-centred care. Nervous patients are looked after by experienced clinicians including Tom Olivelle, who can offer sedation where clinically appropriate for patients with severe dental phobia.

Sedation is never the first step. We begin with communication, reassurance, and gentle techniques, introducing additional support only when needed. This layered approach allows many anxious patients to rebuild confidence over time, often without sedation at all.
