Tooth extraction to relieve pain and protect your oral health
Tooth extraction
Quick and gentle treatment to remove problem teeth that are damaged or decayed beyond repair.

Tooth extraction at Plymouth City Centre Dental Practice
A tooth may need removing when damage, infection, or crowding makes it difficult to restore. Tooth extraction can also help relieve pain, prevent infection from spreading, and protect the health of surrounding teeth.
We only perform tooth extractions when absolutely necessary, and will try to preserve teeth whenever possible. During a tooth extraction, we numb the area fully, remove the tooth carefully, and make sure you leave with clear aftercare guidance so you know how to support healing at home.
If you’re in pain or need urgent care, we can assess you promptly through our emergency dentistry service.

When do you perform tooth extractions?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth that cannot be saved with other treatment. This may include teeth affected by advanced decay, infection, fracture, or wisdom teeth that are impacted or causing repeated problems.
We always consider alternatives first. When extraction is the right option, we remove the tooth quickly, painlessly, and safely, and send you home with a comprehensive aftercare and support plan.

How much does an extraction cost?
The cost of tooth extraction depends on factors such as the position of the tooth, whether it has fully erupted, and the complexity of the removal. Wisdom tooth extraction and impacted wisdom tooth removal may take longer than routine extractions. We provide clear pricing guidelines and explain costs before treatment begins, so you know what to expect.

What to expect during tooth removal

Assessment and planning
We examine the tooth, review X-rays, and confirm whether extraction is needed.

Comfortable removal
We numb the area fully and remove the tooth carefully, minimising trauma to surrounding tissue.

Aftercare and healing guidance
We explain how to care for the area and what to expect during healing.
Do I need a tooth extraction?
You may need a tooth extraction if a tooth is too damaged or infected to repair safely. This can include teeth with advanced decay, repeated infection, fractures below the gum line, or wisdom teeth that are painful, difficult to clean, or causing swelling.
In some cases, teeth don’t cause obvious pain but still pose a risk. We often identify problems during routine examinations or on X-rays, such as hidden infection or impacted wisdom teeth that could affect neighbouring teeth.

Quick and gentle tooth extractions from experienced dentists in Plymouth
If you need to have a tooth removed, our team will work with you to make sure you understand the procedure before treatment begins. Our experienced dentists have decades of experience and carry out extractions quickly and carefully.
Where appropriate, we’ll discuss replacing an extracted tooth with a dental implant. Dental implant planning is supported by our in-house implantologist, Tom Olivelle, who has been placing implants since 2002 and advises on implant options following extraction.
We can also provide extra support to those who feel anxious about tooth extraction. When clinically appropriate, Tom is able to provide sedation to help make treatment more comfortable.
